Hout Bay Drama School Productions are always spectacular

The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy has been running its international drama programme in Hout Bay for many years and this year's productions at the Nassau Theatre were just incredible.

The programme runs classes on Monday afternoons from 3-6 pm, teaching different age-groups from age 5 years upwards. The Lower Primary class for Grades R-3 is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn skills in socialisation, communication and performance skills. These skills follow into the Upper Primary class for Grades 4-6 were the focus is on developing excellence and  confidence in communication and acting on the stage.

Following this class at 5 pm, the Youth Theatre arrives which is open to the youth in Grade 7 and High School up to Matric. This is an advanced acting and performance course, developing young actors in the necessary skills to take them to the next level in the Academy.

The performances this year included 'The Snake Charmer' which was performed by our youngest children to the delight of their parents and the audience.

Following this their was a magnificent and comical production of 'The Sword in the Stone' by the Upper Primary class. They really amazing in their acting ability and really pushed the boundaries of their acting.

The highlight was the Youth Theatre productions of 'Perspectives'. This play which looked at the various forms of prejudice in our world, was performed using the technique of Jerzy Grotowski, who was the developer of poor theatre and the idea that one object can become many. Their play was poignant and acted with such passion, using physical theatre and the techniques of Grotowski and told a very important story to the appreciative audience.

The Academy aims to extend all its children and this programme which is used worldwide aims to give children and teenagers a head start in life.
