Nothing like drama classes to help you with your interview technique

For most of us to progress in life, we have to attend an interview or some sort, either for our next school, university or our job. Businesses employ people who are articulate and confident, and are able to get their personality across in a warm,  friendly manner.  And many times if you are not a good communicator, no matter how good your skills or academic qualifications are, you will end up not the preferred candidate.

Being a good communicator means using your face, eyes, body and voice to communicate clearly. However, even more importantly, it requires you to spontaneous in your language and speech. Unfortunately, learning to improvise when questions are asked is very difficult if you do not have CONFIDENCE  and SPONTANEITY.  Drama classes teach people to come out of their shell and to think creatively.

Sadly, with our academic constraints in our schools today, children are not taught to think and communicate in such a creative way. And due to poor drama teaching in schools, many kids just end up playing games or forming a production which becomes tedious and sometimes boring for the children. Often due to poor negative directing, children lose their confidence and do not want to perform in front of others and this is where many, many people have psychological barrier to public speaking and communication.

The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s programme for children and adults, in a proactive, fun and positive way brings out the best in all people.  This is the only way to teach good communication skills - in other words, we must enjoy communicating.

Recently we have heard from the schools in Cape Town which we runs our international drama curriculum, Bergvliet Primary School. The Principal was telephoned from many of the High School Principals around Cape Town to be told how confident and articulate the children were from this arts-based school, which really does believe in bringing out all the best in the children.

If the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy does not run its programme at your school, the Academy runs many private drama studios around Cape Town after school, including: Hout Bay, Fish Hoek, Tokai, Plumstead, Mitchell’s Plain, Rondebosch, Newlands, Camps Bay, Edgemead, Milnerton, Sunningdale, Melkbosstrand and Atlantis.
