Parents at Bergvliet Primary School follow public opinion in the USA study that drama is essential for a complete education
The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy has been running its international drama programme at Bergvliet Primary for many years, enhancing the arts and culture curriculum but bringing an added dynamic to the school in given children more education of an international reputation. This is why Bergvliet Primary is one of the top drama schools and top government primary schools in South Africa.
Research in the USA showed that the average person realises that the performance arts plays a significant role in the culture and communities of the USA. But do South African's feel the same. Sadly, in many schools in South Africa, drama plays a secondary role.
In 2002, the Performing Arts Research Coalition (PARC) in the USA conducted surveys in 10 major metropolitan areas regarding the role of Performing Arts in their lives and communities .
On average, just over half of respondents had attended a live theatre performance in the past year. According the to surveys in all 10 cities, live theatre is the most commonly attended type of performance. According to a May 2005 Harris Poll :

- 93 percent of Americans believe that the arts are essential to a complete education
- 79 percent feel that the arts should be a priority in education reform
- 79 percent consider the issues facing arts education to be significant enough to merit their personally taking action.
We have to make sure that children receive this valuable education with develops right-brained thinking, clear communication skills, enhances comprehension and understanding of language and builds confidence and self-esteem.
