Did you know research shows empirical support of the benefits of drama education on students’ cognitive development? Camps Bay drama classes show how!
The future entrepreneurs, composers, writers, scientists rely heavily on creativity for their success. This is why teaching children creative thinking is highly important to develop right-brained thinking and their ability to reason and remember and not just regurgitate facts.
In the research in 2006: Drama education: A touch of the creative mind and communicative-expressive ability of elementary school children in Hong Kong. Thinking skills and creativity, 1(1), 34-40, Hui, A., & Lau, found that drama students, compared to their control group counterparts:
1. Were more fluent in their creative responses
2. More expressive and elaborate in story telling
3. Were more unconventional.
4. Showed more improvement in their communicative-expressive ability.
5. More clarity of communication and voice.
The conclusion of this report found that drama significantly enhanced the creative thinking and story-telling ability of children. These findings provided empirical support of the benefits of drama education on the student's cognitive development.
In the Cape Town Helen O'Grady Drama Academy, we frequently get parents letting us know how the programme has helped their children to receive top grades in public speaking and orals at schools Through the improvisation for which the Academy is very famous, children quickly learn how to communicate creatively and spontaneously. The Academy runs extensive programmes around Cape Town to bring out the best in Children. Our Camps Bay studio is no exception and, as you can see, with their wonderful teacher, Heleen, the children, from a very young age, are encouraged to think and respond creatively.
