Understanding the depth of Shakespeare by acting out - children from Herschel Preparatory School show how
A magnificent production of Macbeth was performed by the Grade 7 class at Herschel. No wonder this school is one of the top schools in South Africa because it embraces all aspects of education - not only the academic aspects.
Directed by our wonderful vice-principal, Sunette Strydom, the children in this show were trained in physical theatre and mask work. The idea behind this was that by using neutral masks the children were able to use their bodies and voices more expressively, and this they certainly did to their delighted audience.
The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy writes plays that are accessible to children but at the same time they are a valuable educational tool. Macbeth incorporated modern language coupled with many of Shakespeare's own words so the children's entry into the study of Shakespeare is enjoyable and fun.
The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy in Africa is famous for inspiring children into a love of Shakespeare. To see the ad-libbing and the joy on these girls faces, really showed how this programme really does bring out the best in all children.
