Can drama develop confidence in children?

Many things factors affect the confidence of children and these include:

1. When people ridicule or tease us. We are vulnerable to what people think or say about us. Intentionally or unintentionally words can hurt us and break us down.

2. Children who are kind and gentle and are bullied at school often find their natural confidence is broken.

3. Illness and injuries can make people unsure of themselves.

4. Some children who have had a traumatic experience in the past may withdraw into their shell and not want to face the world.

5. Sadness caused by grief and loss can stay with us for a long time.

6. Children who are abused or neglected also will show a great lack of confidence.

The Helen O'Grady Drama Classes have many children who attend who have lost their confidence and we start by building the self-esteem of children.

Gradually children learn, through drama, to understand themselves and believe in themselves. Children who have lost their voice learn to speak out confidently and act in life with enthusiasm.

The programme nurtures children to ensure that they will be able to make a valid contribution to world in which they live and act. The problem is that if you don't have confidence, children will struggle to make a success in the future.

Drama helps shy children to speak out and develop on a social level. We need to be able to make friends at school, to answer and ask questions in school, or even do our oralswith clarity and conviction. When you are relaxed as a person in social settings, you communicate with ease.

The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy runs its after school clubs in many schools around the world. Here you can see our children with their adorable and fun teacher, Michelle, at Star of the Sea Convent School in Cape Town.
