A famous quote from Desmond Tutu is 'Many people will be quite surprised that, in fact, I am quite shy'. Desmond Tutu, though, learnt the skills to overcome his shyness in a public arena and not let this hinder him. Unfortunately many people don't learn the skills to enable them to step forward in life and this can hinder progress in many respects.
The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy's programme is quite profound and really does improve children's and adult's confidence in communication, speech and socialisation. In a safe, nurturing environment created by this extraordinary programme, children develop over the course of a year in confidence and gain powerful skills they can use for life in communication and public speaking.
Many children are sent to the Academy because of poor speech or shyness in the school reports and by the end of the year, schools notice the huge difference in class and parents find a noticeable difference at home. For people who are naturally shy, there are skills that we can learn to have the confidence to speak out and be heard!
The Academy's expertly trained teachers bring out the best in all the children and using a the method of positive reinforcement and the Academy's international curriculum, children very quickly learn that speaking can be a fun activity in a group situation.
This is all done in a gradual pace, leading to a performance at the end of the year which further enhances the overall effectiveness of the programme because by that stage children will be ready to go on stage.
Over 3,000 children attend the Helen O'Grady Drama Classes in over 30 schools around the Cape Town and surrounding area
