Out, damned spot! out, I say! Yes, it was Macbeth at the French School in Cape Town but the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy!

The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy in Cape Town has a wonderful way of bringing William Shakespeare's plays to life for children. Using many of Shakespeare's words, these shortened are interwoven with humour as well as drama! After performing our Shakespeare plays children start to understand the major themes of many of Shakespeare's great works. We have found our students easily achieve great results in the texts studied at school because they have had this experience of acting on the stage. It is the Academy's aim to make sure that this education experience in our drama programme filters into their academic achievements at school.

We do not perform plays in our Academy purely for entertainment value, or those this ends up being a huge part of what we do, but each time we perform a play with our Youth Theatre, we teach them a theatrical aspect. With Macbeth we were using neutral masks so the actors had to use their bodies and voices to convey meaning to the audience rather than facial expression.

This was one of the most profound plays we have ever seen in our Academy and it was excellently directed by Sunette Strydom.
