Khathu Khangala and Hishaam Ryklief both 12-year-old boys from the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy in Cape Town have been acting in 'Waiting for Godot' at the Fugard Theatre. The Principal of the Academy, Duncan Rice, attended the performance last night and was extremely impressed with the acting of the two boys who played a pivotal role in this absurdist play. This is what he said:

'To have the opportunity to act with Sir Ian McKellen, one of the greatest actors since Lawrence Olivier is a wonderful opportunity and these boys will  have an everlasting memory from this wonderful experience. From the Royal Shakespeare Company to his starring roles in films, Sir Ian McKellen, never lets his audience down with extremely intelligent acting and thoroughly engaging roles. Most famously he was Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. A dignified man, with great humility, he is actor to which all young people should aspire.

To not only be part of the Fugard Theatre and most particularly Khayelitsha performance, these young boys will be learning from the greats. Matthew Kelly, is a wonderful character actor, and took the role of Pozzo with his ebullient flair, with Brendan O'Hea, as the Lucky, were an outstanding coupled pair.

Sir Ian McKellen acted alongside Roger Rees, another wonderful actor with a string of varied acting roles. I gather from the boys that they have learnt so much from this duo, and act out their roles when they get home after the performances! Hishaam attends our drama classes in Newlands, with Megan Sell, and Khathu attends classes in Pinelands, with Christie Fawcett.

We are very pleased that internationally acclaimed Director, Sean Mathias, chose our boys for their natural acting ability. Our Academy is not a pushy stage school but more about developing confidence, self-esteem and acting ability in a nurturing, fun-filled environment. We do have an international casting agency, Aardvark Casting, which our students can opt to join to allow further opportunity for them. This is how initially the boys were spotted, and we know now they will go onto great things thanks to this lucky break.'
