The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy which runs the entire drama programme at the Bergvliet Primary School has just completed the annual Grade 2 productions. What is amazing about the drama course at the school is that every single child gets a chance of performing on the stage in a production every single year. The Academy is proud of the fact that we are training children to enjoy communicating and being on the stage. Our teachers are trained not to shout and scream at the children but to foster a climate of positive reinforcement where every child is confident to stand on a stage. Unfortunately, the experience of many children of productions is that everyone gets very tense and this in turn makes the children feel that they cannot do something and do not like being in front of an audience. The aim of the Academy is to make this experience enjoyable for the children so that being on stage becomes a natural thing so public speaking and performance will an exciting experience rather than the great fear that is created in some schools, where only the elite get this opportunity.
