Pinelands Drama School

Today we visited the Pinelands studio of the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy which operates at St Stephen's Anglican Church Hall. The students here are phenomenal and this is thanks to the really creative work of Beth, our teacher. Beth was on honeymoon today so the Principal, Duncan Rice, took the class.

Students were working on small group improvisations, using a prop. A lot of the valuable work done with children involves conflict resolution and understanding the complex world around us. Today the students were given a blanket as a prop and they had to develop the plot around the blanket being used by a group of friend in a refugee camp. This is very relevant in South Africa at the moment as last year there was a wave of xenophobia in the country. Allowing children the opportunity to experience the lives of other people is part of good drama training as it affords them the opportunity to take on different roles, but most importantly develop an understanding of people different from themselves.
The plays were fantastic.
