Do you want your child to be a Superhero?

One of the biggest problems we have in today's world is a lack of empathy and compassion for each other. Everyone is fighting with each other because we just cannot communicate and accept each other’s differences. This starts right from our immediate surroundings to the world at large. Wars are fought because we see each other as different and not one human race, and there is such a strong  desire with many people to impose their ideology on another person. We just cannot see that we are interconnected as human beings.  Out of fear and hatred we cannot celebrate our differences and diversity.

Is your child regarded as a Superhero to other children?

Children at Bergvliet Primary School in Cape Town are real superheroes

Listening one of the great skills of communication
Communication is the key to unlocking empathy and compassion. These days people just want to talk but not listen to others.  However listening is one of they key skills of communication. If we can listen to others we will be on track to a greater understanding of how we actually are all interconnected.

We need to start from a young age. Children at Bergvliet Primary School in Cape Town use drama as a means of helping children to socialise and deal with conflict situations. The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s international programme teaches children valuable skills in listening and resolving conflict. It has been amazing, over the years, to watch the children of Bergvliet Primary develop respect for each other as human beings, and you will see the confident way in which they speak to each other.

Drama helps children to understand differences
Recently the children from this school performed a play called ‘The School for Superheroes’ which although was set in a fantasy world of superheroes and villains,  taught the children about how caring for others is one of the most important traits we has humans need to have. Our world needs children and adults who show kindness rather than hatred to each other. We need to learn to listen more, accept others for what or who they are, and respond to differences in a thoughtful rather than impulsive way.

Through role play and improvisation in the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s international programme, children are encouraged to engage with each other, and they learn very quickly how to deal with every day situations by listening, thinking and then responding. Using creativity to communicate opens many doors for us and helps us to realise that there are alternative solutions to problems.

Our amazing performers at Bergvliet Primary
We believe Bergvliet Primary School is a school for superheroes because the activity encourage children to be kind to each other, and they have an extensive drama programme to further enhance this. Children who show these characteristics can only be described as superheroes.
